One year ago today, Nixon began his four year term as president. However, his win for the presidential seat was only by a slight margin of less than one percent. This was due mostely to a third party canadate, George Wallace. Wallace won demecrats in the south who promoted segregation, capturing five states and a 13% popular vote.
Even though it is just one year after his election, Nixon already has his eye on the 1972 election. He is working to create a more conservative veiw of himself to capture southern voters for a second term. His new approach, called the southern stratagy, involves slowing the desegregation process, creating a less libral Supreme Court, and naming a Southerner to the Supreme Court. In effect, Nixon wants all of the votes George Wallace recieved.
I find Nixons stratagie pathetic and ill concieved. It not only shocks me that a president would go as far as to change his veiws for votes, but that he is prepared to aid the already slow and hatefull proccess of desegregation in schools and other public utilities. I feel that the more we put off desegregation, the more people will be opposed to it, and the more African Americans will suffer. The presidents job is not to go digging for votes, but to encurage and enforce the rights EVERY American has.
